I have plenty of sports thoughts, but it's not that fun when there's no conversation. Unless you are a pro blogger who gets compensated, it's a chore to keep this up, and heck, this one is (was) relatively simple. I envy those that can do it, but I've found that most who have long, drawn-out, daily blogs tend to be boring, selfish and only do it for themselves in the hopes they get attention, yet hide behind an anonymous name and computer screen. I want to blog for YOU.

I know the Bunny Queen LOVES (sarcastic) my sports ramblings, so I guess I'll just keep blabbing to her. I might use this to post any predictions, but it doesn't make sense to go in depth here anymore, so odds are The Wedge Ledge will return to dormancy.

If you want me to keep this thing going, let me know!

Thanks, guys!

<img style="DISPLAY: block; This move has been many years in the making. I am Texan, always will be Texan, but I want to thank some wonderful people that have made my time here in Georgia special. You will always be with me.

Speedy

You are a remarkable young woman who bust down any walls I had around my heart. The love you give is a pure, genuine and warm. I look forward to hearing all of your college stories and watching you grow into the extraordinary woman you will become. Special things are in store for you down the road. We can't wait for you to visit us in Amarillo. We love you!

Mom of Speedy

Of that branch of the family tree, you have always been the one that has welcomed me. Even during my early days here, you asked how I was and said "hello" when we crossed paths. Sometimes it's just the simple things that make you feel good. Thank you.

Jeanette

The absolute sweetest person in Georgia. As I entered the professional workplace, your friendship was most cherished. You welcomed me into your life when I was young and inexperienced. You are loved and will be missed.

Da Nae

My "girlfriend." It was always a pleasure to have you fill in for the BQ when we could not meet up for lunch. You are a strong person and a great mother and I have the utmost respect for you. Much love to you.

Deola

From one quiet, hard-working person to another, you can be my co-worker anytime. I am glad to have made your acquaintance. May you always have someone special to take to lunch with you.

Wanda

I wish you nothing but happiness as you begin a new chapter in your life. I am glad we bonded stronger through all of the work mergers and changes we went through. Here's to a stable job life for both of us!

The Baileys

What great season-ticket hockey neighbors you are. Thank you for letting us into your section! We are proud to know you. Go Stars!!

The Silers

Well, I guess I just didn't have a good job without a Siler overseeing me! Thank you both for being great bosses for most of my tenure here. Want to come to Amarillo? Best of luck to both of you!

ECHL Columbus Cottonmouths

I'm sorry this town didn't support you more, especially during the tough times. Wherever you guys are scattered now, I hope your NHL dreams come true. Although there were no playoffs, the 2003-2004 season was awesome. Thanks for some great hockey.

*sigh*

*lump*

Well, the moving van is loaded and warming up.....

NFL Uniformity

Ah, it's the time of year when the NFL season starts anew with every team tied for first at 0-0. Whether or not your favorite team does well on the field, at least they can LOOK good.

I want YOU to let me know what your favorite and least favorite NFL uniforms are. In a week or two, I will give a division-by-division breakdown of my opinions. Depending on the amount of responses, your opinions will help influence a "playoff" leading up to the Super Bowl champion of uniforms.

So use the comment link and speak up! You know there are some you look good in and some that make you cringe. We will simply keep it to today's uniforms and not to throwbacks that may be worn throughout the year.

Let's have some fun!

BQ UPDATE:

The BQ has been busy cleaning up our new place over the weekend while I have been packing up our old place. The repair dude finally fixed up a few things for her too. Although I miss her immensely, this way of doing things seems to be working out. There is still a good ways to go leading up to the final step of the process, which is finding me a job! I came up with blanks while searching over the weekend. Before the early 1990's when the 1/10 second began to show up, the crowd and the clock were right on. Now, the fans are 0.9 seconds off each time. When the fans scream "4" the clock reads "4.9," which is actually much closer to "5." When it hits "3.9" the fans yell "3." ...and so on

This leads to that awkward final 0.9 when the crowd begins the uproar about a second too soon. Obviously, the fans are reading the "seconds" digit.

Sure, this is widely insignificant, but it leads me to another countdown:

The countdown to Amarillo! We have a place to live!! I am turning in my work notice and reserving the BQ's plane ticket and a moving truck. That nervous, exciting feeling is filling our veins again. Of course, I will probably be without a job for a little while, so that is always scary, but our plan continues to progress as planned. There will be some adjustments in our lifestyle until we are all settled in, but hopefully in the long-term, it will be well worth it.

The countdown is at 21 days...

On a somber note, be very thankful for what you have. I cannot even begin to comprehend the agony that the citizens of the New Orleans, LA/Gulfport, MS are going through right now. If you think you have it bad, you have not been watching any news lately.

Backup...We Need Backup!

There's no point in going through all of Roger Clemens' accomplishments. I will simply say that it is an absolute treasure that the Houston Astros have him.

But why-oh-why can't the Astros score for him? After Sunday's 1-0 loss to the Dodgers, the Astros have been shut out EIGHT TIMES during Clemens' 27 starts this season. (They have also been shut out a league high 16 times this year). It is amazing they are still in the Wild Card hunt as it is.

There's no question that the Houston offense is weaker this year, but the lack of support for Clemens is inexcusable. My best theory on this is that the opposing pitcher marks the date against Clemens on his calendar and throws the game of his life. Regardless, the 43-year old Clemens goes out to the mound and throws shutout inning after shutout inning. It is not uncommon for Houston to lose when a reliever gives up a late or extra inning run (three of the Astro shutouts have been 1-0 in extra innings).

That's no knock on the bullpen...they have done better than expected this year.

I went through every Clemens-pitched game this year and added two runs to the Astros run total. Obviously, as an official scorer, I have to make some judgment calls on this, but assuming all other things remained equal AND the bullpen did NOT blow a game in which he left with a lead, this is what Clemens' record should be: 21 wins, 3 losses, 3 no decisions.

Current record: 11 wins, 6 losses, 10 no decisions. Did I mention that this is a putrid record for someone was has a Major League-leading 1.51 ERA? ONE POINT FIVE ONE!

Using my theory, the Astros should have TEN more wins on the season. Adding these wins to the standings as of today (8/28), Houston would have an extremely comfortable eight game lead in the Wild Card race and would be battling St. Louis for the division title, only 4 1/2 games out.

Roger Clemens would never sound off on his teammates. He is a class act and fits the Astros' history of sportsmanship perfectly. But I am on my knees with puppydog eyes:

Just two runs a game. That's all the Rocket and his bullpen needs. Please?

BQ UPDATE:

The quest for a place to live is slowly picking up steam. We are working on a couple of possibilities, one that we definitely have our fingers crossed on. Although it's only been 10 days, I know the BQ has had some frustrating moments and hopefully this chapter of the saga will end soon. We're still taking it one step at a time, but we can't wait to get to the next level of the staircase.

Running Up The Score

Over the weekend, I was able to watch the Tennessee Titans comeback win against the Atlanta Falcons. Granted this was only a preseason game, it was fun to watch the primarily 3rd-string team come in and get some valuable playing experience. Regardless of the score, I am sure head coach Jeff Fisher planned to play these guys for so many series.

This leads me to bring up something that has bothered me for years in any sport. When a game is a blowout, what good does it do to bring in your 2nd and 3rd string guys just to "sit on the ball?" Besides preventing any freak injuries on your 1st string team, the playing experience that the backups get in these situations is minimal at best. Why not have the 3rd string quarterback throw downfield? I don't think this is disrespecting your opponent...we've already proven that "our" first string is better than "your" first string on this day, why not let the 2nd stringers go at it at full force? If you are just going to "sit on it," you might as well keep your first team in.

This goes for almost all sports (well, maybe except hockey in which you need a good four lines flowing at most times). In baseball, why do teams let up when they get a big lead and so many "unwritten rules" come into play? No more holding the runner on if you are ahead by a bunch? Don't steal bases with a big lead? That's stupid! With no clock in baseball, no lead is ever truly safe until the 27th out is made. Play the game!!

For all you TV and fantasy freaks out there, wouldn't this make games more interesting if everyone on the field played hard until the final horn?

BQ UPDATE:

The BQ started her new job today. I am sure she will do quite well and I am excited for her. The first weekend of "house hunting" came up blanks, but I'm sure the right place will arise at just the right time. While ESPN has the national exposure and has no competition in being the number one sports network, the NHL was getting sandwiched between numerous other sporting events, big and small (before the lockout, of course).

We do not know how many games OLN will televise as of yet. With the NHL now being the signature event on OLN, I would imagine the amount of hockey seen on TV in the US will increase exponentially and with more consistency. I can imagine a "Game of the Week" on a specific day and time. I can envision 7:00/10:00 television doubleheaders to satisfy fans on both coasts.

I'll even do a plug: If you don't get the Outdoor Life Network, call you local cable or satellite operator today. The NHL is back and it should be a fun year.

BQ UPDATE:

The timing is working out perfectly. Although not a huge sports fan, she has learned to tolerate my babbling and does have a better understanding of the sports world than she once did. She loves hockey. ...and I love her!

I am a native Texan and the Amarillo area is my home. I moved out to Georgia seven years ago and my then-girlfriend and I began our lives together. No offense to the natives, but Georgia has never felt like home to me. The Bunny Queen (BQ) virtually knows no other state BUT Georgia as her home.

Over the past three or so years, we have been trying to find jobs and move back to Amarillo, but it has been futile. It is very tough to do from this great a distance. This past January, we created a gameplan and with some modifications along the way, we have stuck to it. Today, the BQ proceeded with the next step of the plan.

She left me.

No, not like THAT!

The Bunny Queen has ended the 29-year Georgia chapter of her life to pursue a new job and a new place to live in the Amarillo area. I am staying behind until that happens to keep a constant flow of income and to eventually shut down things here. When she does find a job, I will then follow and my job search will begin anew.

Some will say that "you can never go home again" and things will have changed in the seven years I have been gone. This is true. In visits during this time, almost everything I was a part of is different. I'm not in college anymore, my grandfather has passed away, and the sports jobs I held are either nonexistent or changed to the point that I would not recognize them. But I still want to go back. There is a "home" feeling I cannot put into words that I get when I think about it or visit. Amarillo sure does not qualify as the most exciting place in the world (well, except for the ever-changing weather), but it is MY home.

Soon it will be OUR home.

I miss the BQ already. Even if she finds a job immediately, we will probably be apart a month, at least. She would not do this if she did not think it was the right thing for us. We know we are taking a chance, but it is a chance we are confident in taking. ...and I know the BQ is doing this for me which makes me want her even more.

I love you, Bunny Girl.

T-WO-nderful

The 1999 Stanley Cup Champion Dallas Stars!
9th inning Grand Slams!
Scoring 1000 games!
No-hitters!
The back-to-back NBA Champion Houston Rockets!
Overtime winning playoff goals!

I have experienced numerous exciting sporting events and milestones, but one event I have not personally witnessed is a perfect game, the top tier of individual perfection.

Wait...

I have!

Two years ago today, 6:00 HST, the Bunny Queen and I were married on the Big Island of Hawaii. Speedy is a beautiful, highly intelligent girl who is about ready to make the jump into college life. She is quick with a comeback, but also quite lovable.

We played video games, went out to eat, had a yard sale and simply had a great time together. Being with her, the BQ and I pretty much set our worries aside and were carefree for the first time in quite a while.

I noticed something about myself too...not once did I check the scores for the Astros or Titans games the entire time she was here. No updates...no scores on the computer monitor...nothing. Friday night, we were up past midnight laughing and carrying on as time flew by. The games were over before I knew they started.

Without a doubt, I love my sports and my teams. Without a doubt, we are getting back to Amarillo. But sometimes you just have to put everything aside and be thankful for what you have and what really matters in life.

Thanks, Speedy.

Gross Misconduct

The punishment did not fit the crime.

Todd Bertuzzi of the Vancouver Canucks was reinstated by the NHL after his vicious hit on Colorado Avalanche Steve Moore near the end of the 2004 season. ESPN Article (I am trying to locate the video...anyone that can find it, please let me know!)

What the suspension mounted to was 17 regular season games, 7 playoff games and any international play or tournaments during the lockout. It should have been more, if not forever.

Moore's neck was broken as he was sucker-punched from behind in an Avalanche blowout victory. He may never play again. Moore has not been resigned by the Avalanche or been picked up by any other team.

This was not an accident. Bertuzzi was clearly intending to injure. If this was any other workplace outside of the sporting venue, Bertuzzi may be sitting in jail right now.

I am all for second chances. In this case, Bertuzzi's second chance should come when Steve Moore can take the ice again. If Moore's career is over, Bertuzzi should never play in the NHL again.

Home of the Brave?

Native Americans are a proud people. Loyalty and honor are traits that most share. Some Native Americans are proud to have their names attached to schools or pro franchises...others are not. Especially in isolated places like North Dakota, the school name (the Fighting Sioux) is THE identity of the area.

I am a caucasian male, so I will probably never know what it may feel like to be directly offended by something of this nature. Personally, I would not name my team after something that I would consider offensive. When I hear teams that are referred to as "Seminoles" or "Braves," I think of a strong, courageous warrior. Those are characteristics that any team would want. Others may disagree.

The NCAA recently banned these "offensive" names from postseason events. Logos and names would be banned from uniforms and event venues. ESPN Article

What is "offensive" is that the NCAA can't figure out how to set a Division I-A football playoff system when all smaller divisions pull it off nicely. What is "offensive" is the low rate of student-athletes that graduate at the major sports level.

Chalk this up as another black eye (a bruise, not Indian face paint) on the face of the NCAA.

This Star is My Guide

Thank you, Mike. Thank you for making your decision with your heart and not with dollar signs.

Mike Modano, 15-year veteran of the Dallas Stars, signed a 5-year contract late Wednesday evening to remain with the only NHL franchise he has ever known. Virtually ever since I became a fan of the Minnesota North Stars back in 1987, Modano has been "with me." As a high school aged phenom, he was destined to become the number one overall draft pick back in 1988. I do not know hockey without Modano.

Modano took me on a whirlwind ride, maybe more than any other "non-game" situation I can remember in any sport. With the flurry of NHL happenings over the past few weeks, it was sickening to think that this hockey icon would no longer be a Star.

Soon after the lockout ended, the odds did not look good as Stars owner Tom Hicks did not wish to give Modano the length of contract he was looking for. Then, after Modano had talked with other teams, the Stars extended a 5-year contract. Things were looking bright like the North Star this past Tuesday night when Modano was "90 percent sure" he would sign and wanted to sleep on it.

Constantly checking Dallas websites throughout Wednesday and wondering when my chewed fingernails would start to bleed, there was no news until about 3 p.m. EDT.

"Modano rejects Stars latest offer."

That was one dip my virtual roller coaster was not expecting as I was desperately looking for the nearest motion sickness bag.

Mike! What happened??!?!

We now get the obligatory agent stating that the offer was not good enough and that other teams were offering more. (I hate agents.)

After the initial shock, I now begin searching Dallas sites again waiting for the dreadful word of which arch-enemy Modano would sign with (praying it would not be the Detroit Red Wings although they had not been mentioned in contract talks).

Later Wednesday evening, I was getting ready to turn on the Houston Astros game on the internet, when I check ESPN. "Modano accepts Stars latest offer."

Huh? Did I read that correctly?

Struggling to get the mouse to click on the link, my blood pressure tingles throughout my body. I read the article and slump back in my chair in utter relief like a long multiple-overtime game had just finished.

Although Modano had been offered up to $5 million more by other teams, according to The Dallas Morning News, he decided to remain loyal to the franchise that made him a Star. Modano had stated that his agent was "trying to protect him" as they compared the various offers. I'll give the agent the benefit of the doubt in this case, but I'm glad that there is one athlete out there that makes his own decisions.

Visions of Stars floated through my mind as this integral part of the puzzle is now complete. With so many questions in the air about the NHL and it's teams this year, there is no reason why the Stars cannot compete for the Stanley Cup in 2006. This will be a fun season.

By the time Modano's current contract ends, I will have "known" Mike for over two decades. Thank you, Mike, for introducing me to hockey and for giving me the pleasure of following your entire NHL career.

GO STARS!!!!

Roid Rage

Keep the crap out of the game and out of my ears. My Astros have made an unbeliveable turnaround over the past couple months. I can barely see them on TV let alone hear about them on a national level. I want to talk about them, so here's my own 'roid rage.

I don't care if the steroids are "detectable" or not.
I don't care who used someone else's ass as a pin cushion.
I don't care about selfish egos who are ruining their already superb, gifted bodies.
I don't care "whose fault it is" as you obviously don't care about what you put into your bodies (yes, you know what you were taking).
I don't care how long you are suspended as I don't want you around the game anyway.

I DO care about the integrity of the game and home run records. Roger Maris will be my home run hero until someone else cleanly proves otherwise (If you haven't seen the movie 61*, go watch it immediately).
I DO care that one of the most raw talents I have ever witnessed, and one of my favorite ballplayers of all time (Ken Caminiti) is DEAD in part due to steroid use.

On a happier note...
I DO care that the Astros are currently in the wild-card position.
I DO care that the Astros and Atlanta Braves are on pace to meet in the playoffs for the fifth time since 1997 (why me?!?!). Go 'Stros!
I DO care that the NFL Preseason is days away. Go Titans!
I DO care that the Stars hurry up and sign Mike Modano. Go Stars!

Killer B's

Biggio and Bagwell.

In this day and age of free agency and spoiled athletes, there is no set of teammates in professional sports more defined to one team than these gentlemen. They play with class. They play with sportsmanship. They are a pair for all youngsters and baseball fans alike to look up to.

Craig Biggio (18 seasons) has played three vastly different positions (catcher, second base, outfield) with the Houston Astros with little complaint. Having only been on the disabled list once in his career, he continues to hustle out every play. With no signs of slowing down, he holds numerous Astros' franchise records and just set the modern day ML record for being hit-by-pitch.

Jeff Bagwell (15 seasons) has been the Astros' fixture at first base during his tenure. Consistently playing through pain in his arthritic shoulder (until he could bear it no more this season), the soft-spoken Bagwell remains a leader by example in the clubhouse. It would be a shame if the strange-stanced-swinger never played again.

Although playoff success finally struck last season, no one in baseball deserves to win a World Series more. Even if they don't, I am proud that they have kept their loyalty to one organization and play the game the way it was meant to be played. I challenge anyone to find a better set of teammates in professional sports today.

I look forward to seeing them become the first players in Major League history to enter the Hall of Fame with Astros hats on.

Go 'Stros!!

New NHL Rules

The NHL is back! I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I am. Although I am uncertain how well the Dallas Stars (or any NHL team) will do with all of the player transactions, it is exciting to have hockey being talked about in July.

It's time to discuss the new NHL rules...some I like, some I don't. Let's go:

NEW RINK DIMENSIONS

The neutral zone is four feet narrower with the goal lines pushed two feet closer to the end boards. This adds four feet of length to each attacking zone. The theory is that more room will encourage offense, especially on power plays. With less room behind the net, there is also greater potential for deflections or bad passes to come right in front of the net. I can't argue with this one. WEDGIE'S TAKE: UPGRADE

ELIMINATION OF RED LINE FOR TWO LINE PASSES

There is no doubt that most teams have mastered the "neutral-zone trap," limiting breakaways. This new rule should open up the door for longer passes. Critics say that teams will now trap at their own blue line instead of the red line. This may be true, but the attacking team should get a couple more strides of speed to break through. As long as the referees enforce the obstuction rules, I see no problem with the new rule. WEDGIE'S TAKE: UPGRADE

ICING THE PUCK

The red line is still in play for icing, but there have been some modifications. Icing is still "touch icing" which is debatable with the injury factor of players flying down the ice to crash the boards. The best part is that the defensive team CANNOT change make a line change. They could have made this better and had icing illegal WHEN SHORTHANDED. A tired shorthanded team would more likely give up more power play goals. Also, linesmen are given more leeway if they judge that an iced puck was an "attempted pass" in which they would wave it off. This may increase the flow of the game, but I feel these judgment calls would lead to more on-ice arguments with the officials. WEDGIE'S TAKE: NEEDS ADJUSTING

TAG-UP OFFSIDES

This one will be hard to describe if you are not familiar enough with the rule. To simplify, an attacking player who is already in the attacking zone can come back to the blue line and "tag" it as long as he does not touch the puck (which is already in the attacking zone) or take part in the offensive play. Before, the puck pretty much had to be the first thing in the attacking zone. WEDGIE'S TAKE: UPGRADE

INSTIGATOR RULE

A player who starts a fight in the last five minutes of a game will be given an automatic game misconduct and a 1-game suspension. The suspension doubles with each incident. Not only that, the COACH gets fined $10000 with the fine doubling with each incident. I enjoy a good fight and fighting is no doubt part of the game, but if this doesn't clean up unnecessary scrums at the end, I don't know what will. WEDGIE'S TAKE: UPGRADE

GOALTENDER CHANGES

The NHL has finally reduced the size of the goalie pads. As you may have seen on SportsCenter, if you don't believe that pads have grown, check on Patrick Roy's rookie pictures and compare them to his last years. That rule is fine.

We now have an interesting trapezoidal box behind each goal now. Behind the goal line, the goaltender can only play the puck in this area. I have a great modification to this. Sure he can play the puck in this area and have "goaltender protection," but if he goes into the corners, he becomes a "defenseman." This means he should be able to be clobbered and checked into the boards just like any other player. You would think that the way the rule is now, scoring would DECREASE as there would not be as many "open net" chances. WEDGIE'S TAKE: DOWNGRADE

SHOOTOUT

Traditionalists are probably killing themselves over the shootout, but the casual fan never has understood the tie. Today's casual fan wants to see a winner. It is safe to say that TV has destroyed the tie. This is a tricky one for me as I never had an issue with tie games, but have witnessed numerous shootouts at the various minor league levels I have been a part of.

The NHL is using only a 3-on-3 shootout, while every minor league shootout I have witnessed is 5-on-5. 3-on-3 is too short...you have five guys on the ice, I say shoot five guys.

The problem I have is not the shootout itself, but the way the "point system" is now. I will discuss that later. On the shootout in the NHL: WEDGIE'S TAKE: LET'S GIVE IT A YEAR.

RULES CHANGES TESTED, BUT NOT APPROVED

BLUE ICE/NEON LINES

This looked pretty cool. I would have like to have seen this. Anything that would help TV ratings.

WIDER BLUE LINES/RED LINES.

This may happen next year if they decide they need more offensive room, but I don't see this as being necessary.

LARGER NET SIZES

No way. All of the other changes should help scoring. They didn't need to get drastic.

SERVE ENTIRE MINOR PENALTY

Why not? I've wanted this for a long time. You get two minutes, you serve two minutes. This should be added.

POINT SYSTEM

Before "overtime losses" came around, there were always two points given out in the standings for each game...either two points win, no points loss or one point for each team in a tie. There was no issue at all. With the new overtime rules, you now get two points win (regulation or overtime), one point overtime loss, no points regulation loss. I hate it and here is why.

When a game ends in regulation, two total points are given out. If a game goes overtime, THREE total points are given out. Why should there be a bonus point for losing in overtime? You don't get half a win in baseball for going extra innings. You don't get half a win in football for going overtime.

If you look at most minor leagues at the end of the season, you see about 3/4 of the teams have "winning" records when it should be closer to 1/2 in any league. That is because an overtime loss is the same as a "tie" in the current point setup. What really is frustrating is that you can LOSE your way up the standings. You lose in overtime for three straight games, you just got yourself three points.

If the NHL is making all these rule changes, how about change the point system? My suggestion: THREE points given out EVERY game. Here we go:

Regulation/Overtime win: THREE points
Shootout win: TWO points
Shootout loss: ONE point
Regulation/Overtime loss: NO points.

Notice how I said "shootout win" and "shootout loss." If you win in the five-minute overtime, you get the full three. The 4-on-4 overtime did not decide a winner all that much more than 5-on-5 overtime did.

Thankfully, playoff overtime is not changing and NEVER should. Playing the ultimate sudden death match long into the night sets hockey apart from all other sports.

GO STARS!!!

Genesis

GREETINGS!

...and welcome to my new blog...

This blog will be mostly about sports musings and other interesting pop culture tidbits of the day. This will not be your typical sports blog. To tell you why, I will you give you a quick history of my sports life.

Growing up in the Houston, TX, area, I was destined to be involved with sports. The first major league baseball game that I attended was in April 7, 1979, at the ripe old age of four. Not only did I see my first game, I saw Ken Forsch of the Houston Astros throw a no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves. According to my dad, though, I was much more interested in the large colorful scoreboard that gave the Astrodome it's personality...a sign of things to come.

Being in Houston, I became a fan of MLB's Houston Astros, the NBA's Houston Rockets and the NFL's Houston Oilers. I was lucky to be a fan of some of Houston's all time great athletes such as Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott and Hakeem Olajuwon.

In 1987, my family moved to Kalamazoo, MI, where I was introduced to the great sport of hockey. That same year, the minor league (IHL) Kalamazoo Wings became affiliated with the NHL Minnesota North Stars. I instantly became hooked and became a huge fan.

During my sophomore year in high school, my freshman math teacher (who was also the baseball coach) asked if I wanted to score the team's games. I had not done anything extracurricular up to that point, so I said "yes." Little did I know that on April 2, 1991, that would be my first of many, many games to come. I scored all of the games my final three years of high school.

The summer of 1992 was very special. Not only did I work over 70 games for the Connie Mack Kalamazoo Maroons, I was teammates with current New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. He was drafted that summer, but the memories of watching him play up close remained burnt in memory. I worked with the Maroons for three seasons, 1992-1994.

After high school (1993), I went to college at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX, where I not only was the baseball scorer for five seasons (1994-1998), I worked in the Sports Information Department and began working other sports such as football (not fun), volleyball (very fun), soccer (suprisingly fun) and basketball. Needless to say, the number of games I worked per year exploded.

In 1996, I reached the pinnacle of my career working two seasons with the independent baseball league Amarillo Dillas. I had more fun working these games than anything else I have done. I also worked with the then-WPHL hockey Amarillo Rattlers for two seasons.

...Don't forget about my major league teams that I support. My college years brought much transition to those too. By pure coincidence, the North Stars moved down to Texas with me in 1993 and became the Dallas Stars. In 1997, the Oilers transferred to Tennessee and became the Titans in 1999. I was fortunate in the '90s to celebrate my first three "world championships" with the Rockets in 1994 and 1995 and the Stars in 1999.

After over 1000 athletic events scored, I "retired" after graduation in 1998 and moved out to Georgia to be with my beautiful girlfriend who is now my wife. Have no fear, we are making efforts to get back to the Texas Panhandle. I don't know if I will ever score a game again, but the memories will last forever.

I bring a unique perspective to this blog and that is why I will sporadically type something up when the right time comes.
